Lhasa Apso
Groomer
in Hull
Lhasa Apsos are one of the breeds we see most at our salon in Bilton, just off the A165 into Hull. We love them: loyal, characterful little dogs with a bit of attitude. But that long, heavy double coat needs regular, proper grooming to stay comfortable and tangle-free.
At Jojoes Dog Grooming we’ve been grooming dogs in east Hull since 2002. We only take a limited number of dogs each day, so your Lhasa gets calm, unhurried attention rather than a conveyor belt.
The Lhasa Apso coat: beautiful, but hard work
Lhasas were bred to cope with cold Tibetan mountains, so they have a dense undercoat under a long, straight top coat. It doesn’t shed much, which owners love, but the loose hair stays trapped in the coat instead. Left alone, that turns into knots, then tight mats close to the skin.
The usual trouble spots are behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, on the back legs and between the pads. Wet walks and a Hull winter make it worse, as damp hair tangles fast.
Popular Lhasa Apso styles
- Puppy cut: an even, short trim all over. The easiest style to live with and the most popular for pet Lhasas.
- Teddy bear trim: a short body with a rounded, fluffy face and fuller legs. Cute, and still practical day to day.
- Longer coat: keeps more of the traditional flowing look. It suits owners who are happy to brush every day, as it mats quickly otherwise.
Not sure which suits your dog? Tell us how much brushing you can realistically do at home and we’ll help you choose.
Lhasa Apso grooming prices
| Service | What’s included | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full Groom | Bath with conditioning shampoo, blow-dry, brush-out, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, underpads trimmed, cut and style | from £45 |
| Bath and Tidy | Bath, blow-dry, brush-out, ears cleaned, nails trimmed, underpads trimmed | from £35 |
| Bath and Dry | Bath, towel dry or blow-dry, ears cleaned | from £25 |
Most Lhasas need the Full Groom every visit to keep the coat manageable. A Bath and Tidy works well between full grooms if you keep on top of brushing.
How often should a Lhasa Apso be groomed?
- Professional groom: every 4–6 weeks for a puppy cut or teddy trim. Longer coats need it at least that often.
- Brushing at home: three or four times a week for a short trim, daily for a longer coat. Brush in sections right down to the skin, then follow with a metal comb. If the comb catches, there’s a knot hiding.
- After wet walks: dry the coat properly and check the legs and tummy before knots set in.
A badly matted coat is usually kinder clipped short and grown back than pulled at for hours. We’ll always talk it through with you before we start.
Eyes, ears, feet and teeth
Lhasas have hair growing round the eyes that can poke and irritate them, and many get tear staining. We trim neatly round the eyes so your dog can see properly. Their hairy ears can trap dirt and moisture, so ears are cleaned on every groom, and we trim the fur between the pads to stop slipping on hard floors.
Small breeds often struggle with tartar, too. You can add our gentle Emmi-pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning to any groom.
Starting young
Lhasas can be independent and a little wary of strangers, so an early, positive start helps. Our puppy grooms introduce the bath, dryer and clippers gently, so grooming becomes routine rather than a battle.

Lhasa Apso grooming FAQs
What’s the best haircut for a Lhasa Apso?
For most pet Lhasas, a puppy cut or teddy bear trim. Both are short enough to brush easily and keep mats away, while still looking like a Lhasa.
How much does it cost to groom a Lhasa Apso in Hull?
A Full Groom starts from £45, a Bath and Tidy from £35 and a Bath and Dry from £25.
Can you groom a matted Lhasa?
Yes. Heavy matting is often kindest clipped short so the coat can grow back healthy. We’ll explain the options before we start.
How old should my Lhasa puppy be for a first groom?
Once they’ve finished their vaccinations. An early, gentle introduction makes every groom after it easier.
